The short answer

Usually not on a standard test. Common 5-panel and 10-panel drug screens don't look for kratom's main compound, mitragynine. But kratom can be detected if an employer or lab orders a specific test for it, so if you're being tested, it's smart to ask what the panel covers.

What standard drug tests actually look for

Most workplace drug screens are 5-panel or 10-panel tests. A typical 5-panel test checks for THC, cocaine, amphetamines, PCP and opiates. Expanded panels add things like benzodiazepines, barbiturates and methadone.

Kratom isn't an opiate drug like morphine or codeine, and its main alkaloid, mitragynine, is a different molecule. That's why kratom isn't part of those standard panels.

When kratom can show up

Labs can test for mitragynine and related compounds when they're specifically asked to. Some employers, treatment programs and court-ordered programs do order kratom testing, so "it's not on the standard test" isn't a guarantee.

How long it stays detectable depends on how much you use, how often, and your own body. We cover that in more detail in how long kratom stays in your system.

Can kratom cause a false positive?

People search this a lot. Lab confirmation tests are built to tell compounds apart, so a confirmed result is generally specific to what was tested for. If you're ever worried about a result, ask for the confirmation test results and talk to the medical review officer handling your test.

What about 7-OH products?

Concentrated 7-OH (7-hydroxymitragynine) products are a different conversation. Florida added high-concentration 7-OH and several related compounds to its Schedule I list by emergency rule. Read more in Kratom vs 7-OH: what's the difference.

The honest bottom line

If your job or program tests for kratom, assume it can be found. If you're not sure what your test covers, ask HR or the testing provider before you drink or buy kratom. Our kava tenders are happy to point you to kratom-free drinks too, from straight kava shells to zero-proof cocktails on our menu.

People also ask

Will kratom show up on a 5-panel drug test?

Not on a standard 5-panel test. Those panels look for THC, cocaine, amphetamines, PCP and opiates, and kratom's main compound, mitragynine, isn't one of them.

Will kratom show up on a 10-panel drug test?

Not on a standard 10-panel test either. Kratom only shows up when a lab is specifically asked to test for it.

Can employers test for kratom?

Yes. Specialized tests for mitragynine exist, and some employers and programs use them.

How old do you have to be to buy kratom in Florida?

21. Florida law prohibits selling kratom products to anyone under 21.
