The short answer

A kava bar is like a coffee shop and a neighborhood bar had a zero-proof baby. You walk up, order a shell of kava (or a kava cocktail, kratom, coffee or kombucha), say "Bula!" and hang out. No alcohol, no cover, and the kava tenders will walk you through everything.

What a kava bar actually is

Kava bars serve kava, kratom and other botanical drinks in a relaxed bar setting. People come to unwind after work, play pool or games, catch live music and trivia, or just talk. Kava & Company was Jacksonville's first kava bar and now has three spots.

How to order your first kava

  1. Tell the kava tender it's your first time. They'll steer you right.
  2. Start with a shell. Traditional kava is served in a coconut shell. Expect an earthy taste and a tingly tongue.
  3. Toast "Bula!" and drink it in one go. A chaser (fruit or juice) helps.
  4. Give it a little time before ordering another. See how long kava takes to kick in.
