The short answer

Kava can make some people feel relaxed and sleepy, especially stronger kava or larger amounts. But research on kava as a sleep aid is limited and mixed, so it's not a proven sleep remedy. Don't combine it with sleep medications or alcohol, and don't drive after.

Why kava can make you sleepy

Kavalactones relax the body. Some kava varieties are described by drinkers as "heavy" and sleepy, while others feel lighter and more social. How much you drink matters too.

What research says

A few small studies have looked at kava and sleep, especially sleep troubles linked to stress, with mixed results. There isn't strong evidence that kava works as a sleep aid, and it isn't approved for treating insomnia.

If you drink kava at night

  • Plan your ride home before your first shell
  • Don't mix with sleep aids, alcohol or other sedatives
  • Talk to your doctor if you take any medication
  • Remember that regular heavy use has its own risks (is daily kava safe)

A wind-down ritual

Lots of people simply like a calm shell after work to mark the end of the day. Our San Marco and Jax Beach bars are open late for exactly that.

People also ask

Will kava help me sleep?

Some people feel sleepy after kava, but it isn't a proven sleep aid. Research is limited.

Can I mix kava with melatonin or sleep pills?

Ask your doctor first. Kava can add to the effects of other things that make you drowsy.

Is it safe to drink kava before bed?

For most healthy adults an occasional shell is common, but don't drive after, and talk to your doctor if you have health conditions or take medication.
